Training and Living with a Deaf Dog

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

We recently had our first experience with a deaf puppy and were faced with the predicament of whether to put him to sleep or attempt to find him a home. We couldn’t put him to sleep- his personality still shone through despite his impairment, and he loved nothing more than to follow us around the house and fall asleep at our feet. We didn’t know Barney was deaf until he was away from his littermates, as he tended to sleep near them and woke up from the vibrations, however it wasn’t till he was alone and we called him, he didn’t wake up…

Barney has since found a loving and understanding home where he will live out a happy life, however we thought it might be helpful for others out there in the process of training and perhaps just pondering on the possibility of acquiring a deaf puppy to know what to expect.

Bulldogs carry the gene for deafness.

If you are going to live with a deaf dog, you will have to learn a new way to communicate with that dog. You will have to tune into the world of movement, vibration and light. You must use some type of sign language system, either American Sign Language or signs you invent yourself. It will seem strange at first, but both you and your dog will adapt quickly. All that’s required is a willingness to learn.

Make sure your Aussie Bulldog Puppy comes with Official Registration papers

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

It has come to our attention that many members of the public are purchasing so called Australian Bulldogs, without or with false breed papers. These dogs are usually found in Pet Shops or the Trading Post, we don’t recommend any prospective puppy buyer to purchase from a breeder advertising in this paper. We advertised our first litter of Aussie Bulldog puppies in this paper, and it only attracted people looking to ruthlessly breed without providing a loving home or wanting them for pet shops. Pet shops also advertise in this paper, so beware. The Australian Bulldog Society does not allow their puppies to be sold in pet shops. It is worth the wait to go on a waiting list and ensure your receiving a real Aussie Bulldog, that is one that hasn’t been crossed with Pit Bull terrier, British Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Staffordshire Bull Terrier just to name a few.

Make sure your puppy comes with Australian Bulldog Society registration papers, if you want a guarantee that your puppy is the result of an Australian Bulldog to Australian Bulldog matings.

Whelping Boxes

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Your pet needs to know this is where she will have her puppies. Without it, she is likely to find a place of her own, and it may not be one you like. We’ve known dogs to whelp in closets, under beds, even under the sheets in your bed. Your whelping box should be ready at least 2 weeks prior to her going into labor. Give her time to get used to it and feel comfortable with it.

Puppy teething solutions

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

When most people bring home their cute new puppies, the furthest thing from their minds is the stressful time of teething. Just as with babies teething, puppies will want to chew on everything they can get their mouth on. This can lead to total destruction of your belongings, but there are tried and true ways to help prevent this from happening, and help you and your pup get through the teething period with ease.

Information about worms- signs, symptoms, types

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Significance

Most pets will become infected with worms at some stage during their lives. But while these worms can cause serious illness in your pets, the good news is that they are simple to eradicate and prevent.

What are Worms?

Intestinal worms affect thousands of Australian pets every year and, if left untreated, can lead to the development of cysts or hydatids in the lung, liver or heart.

The Canines Gastrointestinal System- The importance of Prevention

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

The GI tract may be inhabited by many species of parasites. Their cycles may be direct, in which eggs and larvae are passed in the feces and stadial development occurs to the infective stage, which is then ingested by the final host.

FAQ regarding the Aussie Bulldog Character

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

We thought we’d compile some of the questions we commonly get asked regarding the Australian Bulldog temperament, behaviour, requirements etc.

  1. How are Aussie Bulldogs with Children?

We have found our Aussie Bulldogs to be very reliable, loyal and fun in character. We don’t have small children ourselves, however our close friends and family regularly visit and ofcourse they have a ball with the Aussie’s, who equally enjoy the interaction. We think its important for your new fmaily member to be brought up with children if this is the lifestyle they are likely to be subject to. Any dog can be potentially dangerous around children however if trained, socialised and treated with respect it is unlikely that your puppy will develop any unwanted traits. Therefore, yes Aussie Bulldogs are good with children, however they must be supervised, trained, socialised and respected to ensure their sound mental development. Aussie’s have quite a bit of weight behind them too, however some people let them play rough when their young, not realising

BARF- The bones and raw food Diet, an Introduction

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

What is the Diet About?

Feeding dogs the diet they evolved to eat over millions of years of genetic adaptation. Other terms for the diet include evolutionary diet, natural diet and species appropriate diet.

Philosophy

If our bulldogs are to reach their genetic potential in terms of health, longevity, physical activity and reproduction, their modern day diet must mimic as closely as possible their evolutionary diet.

The further an animal’s diet departs from its evolutionary diet, the more health problems that animal is likely to develop. That is why modern grain based pet foods, no matter how well researched, cause many health problems. It is impossible for them to match the health enhancing attributes of the evolutionary diet.

Nutrition-Requirements and Related Diseases

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

In regards to management practices feeding is one of the most important practices of the pet owner. Vet’s believe that feeding is an integral part of both preventative health care and many treatment protocols for medical and surgical patients. The simplest method of meeting the nutritional requirements of dogs is to feed a fixed formula, complete and balanced commercial diet designed and appropriately tested for dogs. For more information on such commercial products visit this link, on this page we have listed some helpful websites, with information on products we recommend. However, having said that we and many other breeders and dog owners have shown that dogs can thrive well eating a variety of commercial and home foods, which may include vegetables and synthetic supplements, take the BARF diet for example.

The Diet We Recommend Feeding Your Dog

Friday, September 14th, 2007

There are many brands of dog food available. We personally don’t feed our dogs very much dryfood at all, we concentrate mainly on fresh meat, be it chicken drumsticks, brisket bones, beef mince, or fish. Our dogs are used to a wide variety of foods. Having said that, this only applies to our older dogs, those that have finnished all their growing.
