FAQ regarding the Aussie Bulldog Character

We thought we’d compile some of the questions we commonly get asked regarding the Australian Bulldog temperament, behaviour, requirements etc.

  1. How are Aussie Bulldogs with Children?

We have found our Aussie Bulldogs to be very reliable, loyal and fun in character. We don’t have small children ourselves, however our close friends and family regularly visit and ofcourse they have a ball with the Aussie’s, who equally enjoy the interaction. We think its important for your new fmaily member to be brought up with children if this is the lifestyle they are likely to be subject to. Any dog can be potentially dangerous around children however if trained, socialised and treated with respect it is unlikely that your puppy will develop any unwanted traits. Therefore, yes Aussie Bulldogs are good with children, however they must be supervised, trained, socialised and respected to ensure their sound mental development. Aussie’s have quite a bit of weight behind them too, however some people let them play rough when their young, not realising

that they will still be playing like that when their fully grown. They won’t understand why they are getting in trouble and the owner may not understand or accept that their once small puppy is now knocking their small children over. Its all about treating and training your puppy, moulding him to be the way you want him to be in the future, from day 1.

2. Are Aussie Bulldogs easy to train?

Aussie Bulldogs are relatively intelligent, combining the brain power of the boxer, bullmastiff, staffordshire Bull Terrier and the British Bulldog has made for an interstingly intelligent yet clown like character. True Aussie’s always seem to retain an air of nobility about themselves, which we just love, and this is all ascentuated by the tendency of the nose to sit back slightly, a trait our dogs carry well, and a trademark of our kennel.

Therefore if conditioned from the very beginning to respond to enjoyable stimuli in a way that benefits both him and his owner, the Aussie will excel in puppy preschool, obedience, and our next goal-AGILITY! Yes we believe some of our youngsters have what it takes to run fast and clear some hurdles. We’ll keep you posted with our progress- Zeppelin is likely to be our first, she has a fantastic build, just like her parents.

Aussie’s also love food, they will eat just about anything, and in large amounts, this we believe is why they are so healthy. They eat all their vegetables, pasta, bananas, you name it! hence they are easily persuaded to carry out commands, so they can be rewarded with some food. Food isn’t the only device that can be used, our Aussie’s also love toys the Kong being a good hardy example and ofcourse good old praise, another Aussie favourite.

So Yes Aussie’s are easy to train, but you will require, patience, persistence, and a good sense of humour! to be successful.

3. Do Australian Bulldogs Bark much?

Our Aussie’s will bark if someone approaches that they aren’t sure of/don’t recognise. Their good watch dogs. We value this trait, preferring a dog that will let you know of potential dangers, rather than just sitting back while an intruder gets his way. However other than this, they tend to be laid back, enjoying whatever lifestyle you provide, whether it be a run along the beach, swim, sit back on the couch, they will be apart of it!

4. Do Australian Bulldogs require much exercise?

This varies between dogs. Some dogs have a slightly slower metabolism and others much faster. For example Zarah is a real clown and will run around mad, while Zelda is much more laid back. However their level of activity is also largely affected by what you feed your dog and how much you feed your dog. Obviously if your dog is overweight he will not want much exercise, but requires it! So don’t let your dog get overweight.

We believe in regular walks, and outings when time permits, where we may head to the river, beach, or just go for a good bush walk. These activities help stimulate the dogs senses, and get them out of the house for a while.
